Speech Therapy

Many standard speech therapy techniques are not appropriate for individuals with autism spectrum disorders because they were not developed to address the unique characteristics of autism. As a result the treatment of speech and language difficulties in individuals with autism is complex and requires a unique approach to be successful.

Speech therapy in the Diagnostic and OutreachCenter is provided by licensed Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) who have extensive experience with individuals with autism. Speech therapy is highly individualized and specific to the individual needs of each person receiving therapy. Speech therapy at the Diagnostic and OutreachCenter can address a variety of difficulties such as articulation problems, issues of speech fluency, deficits in pragmatic language, as well as training to use communication devices.

Speech therapy is implemented in conjunction with ABA therapy when both therapies are appropriate for an individual.
